Computer Graphics in Film September 24, 2008

On you tube do a keyword search for Metropolis, The Cabinet of Dr Calligari, Star War etc….

Computer graphics in film is a much more complex proposition, the whole process requires that you match whatever you generate in the computer to the real world. The more as you pursue the real the more you see the errors and problems.

There is however a whole legacy of special effects prior to the computer going back a very, long way, in Metropolis you see some amazing special effects but you might also recognise the story of the the Matrix

Have things moved on that much? We are still telling the same old Stories, the relationship between man an machine, is constantly being explored.

But What about Blade Runner? Both Blade Runner and I-robot were written by Philip K Dick and are really not about robots at all but about what it means to be human.

Through discussion and practice the unit will examine the relationship between real and computer generated 3D space to inform the creation of 3D computer graphics for inclusion in a range film and animation projects.
